Rust's borrow checker finally clicked after 2 years of fighting it — what was your breakthrough moment?

Was ready to give up on Rust entirely after months of lifetime annotation hell. Then I stopped fighting the compiler and started designing data structures around ownership from the start instead of retrofitting. Suddenly everything got easier. Curious what finally made Rust click for other people who struggled initially.

for me it was learning to just clone when i needed to instead of treating every clone as a personal failure. perf tune later, correctness first

arc<mutex<>> everywhere until i actually understood when i needed it vs when i was just scared of the borrow checker, took embarrassingly long

haha same, i overused Rc<RefCell<>> for like 6 months before understanding ownership properly

reading the rustonomicon helped way more than any blog post, understanding WHY the rules exist made them feel less arbitrary

building a linked list (the classic rust rite of passage pain) weirdly taught me more about ownership than any tutorial did

honestly still fighting it 3 years in lol, async rust lifetime issues specifically are a different beast entirely

async rust is genuinely a whole extra layer of pain, youre not alone

designing with ownership in mind upfront instead of retrofitting is exactly the unlock, 100% agree with op

the compiler error messages have gotten SO much better over the years too, that alone made learning way less painful than when i started
