If AI coding assistants write 80% of your code now, what skill should junior devs actually focus on learning?

reading code > writing code as a skill now imo. if they can review and catch what the AI got subtly wrong thats the actual valuable skill

system design and understanding tradeoffs, AI can write the function but it cant tell you if ur architecture is going to fall over at scale

this so much, ive seen senior-looking code that falls apart under load bc nobody thought about the actual access patterns

debugging without AI for at least the first year honestly. you need to build the mental model of how to isolate a problem before you outsource it

i still make juniors write a few things by hand even if its 'inefficient', its like doing math without a calculator in school, builds intuition

communication skills, weirdly. so much of the job now is explaining what you want precisely which is basically prompt engineering + spec writing

underrated take, writing clear requirements is a skill that transfers everywhere now

testing and verification. if they trust AI output blindly without knowing how to validate it thats where real bugs ship to prod

honestly let them use the tools fully but pair with them regularly so you can see HOW theyre thinking, not just the output

data structures and algos still matter for interviews unfortunately even if daily work doesnt need it as much, dont skip that prep
