Does anyone else feel weirdly guilty taking PTO even when you have plenty banked?

I have 3 weeks of PTO sitting unused, manager has told me twice to take time off, and I still feel this low-grade guilt every time I actually book it. Not even a toxic workplace, just some internalized thing. How do people actually get over this?

therapy helped me realize this is almost always tied to some version of 'my worth is tied to my output' and that belief runs deep for a lot of us in this industry

what fixed it for me honestly was just watching what happened when i was out, the world did not end, the team did not collapse, the sprint continued fine. did it 3 times before the guilt actually faded

this is the real answer, you cant think your way out of it, you have to prove it to yourself with actual evidence over several trips

I set up auto-decline on my calendar and an out of office that says i'm fully offline, removing the OPTION to half-work on vacation removed the guilt entirely for me

millennial/gen z workplace trauma is a hell of a drug, my parents took a month off every summer and never thought twice about it

genuinely, use it or lose it policies exist for a reason, your company WANTS you to take it so they dont have to pay out unused balance in some places, you're leaving free money on the table by not going

i reframed it as 'my job is to come back better, not to never leave' and that tiny mental shift did more than i expected

lol i am the opposite problem, i book PTO constantly and feel zero guilt, not sure what that says about me either

burnout taught me this lesson the hard way, dont wait for a breakdown to learn what you're describing, just go book the trip today
