React 19 Server Components in production for 4 months — is it actually worth the migration pain?

Finished migrating our dashboard app to RSC + the new React 19 compiler. Bundle size dropped noticeably and initial load is faster, but the mental model shift for the team was rough — figuring out what's a server component vs client component, 'use client' boundary debugging, and some third-party libraries just don't play nice yet. Would I do it again? Yes, but budget 2x the time you think you need for the learning curve alone.

the 'use client' boundary debugging is so real, spent an entire afternoon chasing a hydration mismatch that turned out to be a component importing a client-only lib transitively

third party library compatibility is genuinely the biggest blocker for most teams i've talked to, not the framework itself

yep we had to fork 2 small libs just to add 'use client' directives ourselves, annoying but not hard

the compiler eliminating most manual useMemo/useCallback calls alone made this worth it for us, so much less noise in code review now

genuinely curious about your bundle size numbers, we saw maybe 15% reduction which was less dramatic than the marketing suggested

RSC mental model finally clicked for our team once we stopped thinking in components and started thinking in 'where does this data need to live'

we bailed halfway through the migration honestly, team velocity tanked too hard and we had deadlines. might revisit next quarter with fresh eyes

respect for being honest about that, i think a LOT of teams quietly did this and nobody posts about the failed migrations

2x time estimate tracks with our experience exactly, also add another 1x for 'things we didn't know we didn't know' lol

is anyone else just waiting for the ecosystem to mature more before jumping in? feels like early adopter tax is still pretty high
