Are 1M+ token context windows killing traditional vector database RAG?

With Gemini 2.0 and Claude models supporting multi-hundred-thousand to million-token contexts with near 100% needle-in-a-haystack retrieval, the debate around vector databases vs large prompt stuffing has resurfaced. Is hybrid RAG still the gold standard, or are you just loading the entire handbook into context?

Context stuffing works great for one-off document analysis, but if you have 500,000 internal documents updated every hour, dumping everything into every query would burn through your annual cloud budget in three days. Retrieval filtering is still necessary.

Agreed. The sweet spot is coarse lexical + vector filtering to get 10-20 relevant documents, then letting the model reason over that rich 50k token context.

Cost and latency are the real factors. Querying a 1M token context takes 10+ seconds and costs dollars per query; a vector search takes 5 milliseconds and costs fractions of a cent.
