OpenAI o3-mini vs o1: developer experience after weeks in production

Many dev teams swapped out o1 for o3-mini with high reasoning effort over the past few weeks. The math and competitive coding benchmarks looked great on paper, but how has your day-to-day experience been with architectural design, API drafting, and bug hunts?

o3-mini is significantly faster than original o1 while scoring higher on code verification. For \$1.10 per million input tokens, it replaced 80% of our heavier model queries.

One annoyance though: prompt caching is essential if you feed in long system prompts, otherwise token costs creep up quietly.

For pure system architecture trade-offs, I still find myself prompting both Claude 3.7 and o3-mini. They have distinct 'flavors' of reasoning when critiquing schema designs.
